CHICO, Calif. — United States Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra visited Butte County as part of his California
tour to highlight mental health, reproductive health care, and protection against COVID-19.
He joined Butte County Public Health, Enloe Medical Center, and local pediatricians for a round-table discussion about vaccinating
children.
"We know that today COVID is still with us. It is not where it was six days ago, six weeks ago, or even six months ago, but
it is still with us and we have work to do."
He said more than 1,500 people a day are still dying from the virus and more than 3,000 people a day are being hospitalized.
Becerra said the prevalence of COVID-19 is the reason people should continue to wear masks and keep the people who can not get
vaccinated or are immunocompromised safe.

"The virus is still out there and is still being passed along. Masks have been proven, once again the facts, masks have been proven
effective. They're not the only way, but they are certainly effective."
Becerra said he hopes parents will look at data when considering vaccinating their children against COVID-19.
He said Health and Human Services does everything it can to make parents feel confident that when a vaccine is offered to a child, it
is safe and effective.
Becerra recommends people get vaccinated and continue to wear their masks when it is needed.
"[Health and Human Services] continue to try to do what we can to keep our families safe," said Becerra.
