Some studies have detected spike protein and vaccine mRNA components in the blood after
COVID vaccination: • Ogata et al. (Clinical Infectious Diseases, 2021) found circulating S1 and
spike antigen in plasma of Moderna recipients, detectable as early as day 1 after the first dose. •
Yonker et al. (Circulation, 2023) reported elevated free full-length spike protein in the blood of
adolescents and young adults who developed myocarditis after mRNA vaccination, while it was not
detected in asymptomatic vaccinated controls. • Brogna et al. (Proteomics – Clinical Applications,
2023) detected recombinant spike protein fragments by mass spectrometry in some vaccinated
individuals up to 187 days after vaccination. Despite these findings, blood banks do not currently
screen donated blood for spike protein, residual mRNA, or lipid nanoparticles. The FDA, AABB
and major blood services state that blood from vaccinated donors is considered safe and that there is
no requirement to test for or separate donations based on COVID vaccination status. There is also
no routine validated screening test in use for these components. The gap between what research has
detected and what is actually screened for in the blood supply remains unresolved.
