Can you please verify if this rumor is correct? If so, can you please share what stage this plan is in and possibly send some renderings of what may be planned? The planning and conceptual designs for the recreation improvements were completed during the Bucks Creek relicensing processes and are included in the 2019 Bucks Creek Recreation Management Plan (RMP). The RMP is available in the FERC e-Library at the following page: Accession Number 20190920-5141. Once on the eLibrary page, click on the “Public_Bucks_Enclosures_8-13.PDF” (the RMP is Enclosure 8). General design considerations for all facilities begins on page 3-7. The scope of the Haskins improvements begins on page 3-11, and conceptual drawings of the Haskins improvements are on pages 3-12 and 3-13. It is very thorough in describing plans for the campground and surrounding areas. I am very dismayed and disappointed to learn of this development which appears to have been in the late planning stages for several years now. It may be too late for any public input but I will provide some none the less. I have been camping at Haskins all my life. At age 70, I figure I have maybe 10 years more to enjoy camping. Both of my grandfathers hunted and fished this area in the 40’s and 50’s. This year we have our 5th generation of family coming to Haskins Campground. Bucks Lake has reached mythical proportions to our extended family. I always camp in the upper loop, along with many families of cousins and friends. We often occupy 6-8 camps in this upper loop. Sites 55-63 are the most beautiful sites in Haskins, providing space, shade and filtered views of the Haskins inlet. These campsites are large and spacious, unlike many of the more crowded sites in the lower campground, some of which are right on top of each other like in Yosemite Valley. Due to the narrow road in the upper loop, most trailers (and their generators) thankfully stay down below, keeping things relatively quiet up here. We also have access to walk down across the (proposed development area) to the inlet without bothering anyone or traipsing through their camp. It looks like the plan is to add maybe 5 or so campsites. During my recent trip to Haskins over the last two weeks, I noticed survey stakes with orange ribbons so maybe the project is imminent now. This would be an absolute travesty for the following reasons: -It would not be safe or advisable to access them from the Haskins boat ramp road so that means cutting in some kind of access road (and probably adding another restroom) below camps 55-63. -This would also require removal of many old growth trees, which currently provide shade and beauty to these sites. -much wildlife currently traverses these sites at night, on their way to the inlet for food and water -The sites are already quite hot as the sun tracks through the day but currently provide filtered shade. -Accessing Haskins inlet would now require a much longer walk down/up the current hilly roads at either end of the loop. There will be no “going back” once this is ruined. At minimum, and as a compromise, and due to the already- limited access, perhaps these new sites could be made into “small sites” for camping-only (no RV’s, motorhomes and their generators)? Better yet, eliminate this addition entirely.
